Chapter 13

Jo greeted Deputy Brian Franklin, who was standing on her front porch. “Hello, Brian.”

“Morning, Jo. I’m sorry to bother you so early on a Saturday morning. I was wondering if I might have a minute of your time.”

“Yes. Of course. Delta’s in the kitchen whipping up some tasty treats. Would you like a cup of coffee?”

“I appreciate that, but I’m here on official business.”

“Official or not, I’m sure there’s no harm in offering you coffee.” Jo closed the door behind the young deputy, chatting casually as they made their way to the back of the house.

Delta did a double take when she saw Franklin. Not missing a beat, she hustled to the counter and began assembling a plate of baked goods. “Good morning, Brian. We haven’t seen you around in a while. How’s life been treating you?”

“Pretty good. I’m enjoying the cooler weather and even took a week off to go hunting up north with my dad. As far as work goes, it’s been quiet these past couple of months, ever since Jo’s kidnapping, but it seems things are heating up again.”

“I have a fresh batch of banana nut muffins with your name written all over them.” Delta set the plate of goodies on the table and returned to the counter to pour him a cup of coffee. “Now you know you’re gonna hurt my feelings if you don’t try at least one.”

“I suppose I can let you twist my arm. Thanks, Delta.”

Jo waited for Brian to take his place at the table and then chose the seat directly across from him. A chilling thought occurred to her. “I hope you aren’t here because of my former resident, Sherry Marshall. She just bought a car and her driving skills are a little rusty.”

“No.” Brian reached for a muffin. “In fact, I saw Sherry driving through town last night. She was exceeding the speed limit. I stopped her and gave her a verbal warning.”

“Unfortunately, she’s developing a lead foot.”

“She has a sweet car. That Coupe DeVille is in mint condition.”

“Inside and out.” Jo sipped her coffee, eyeing the deputy over the rim. “If it doesn’t involve Sherry, I’m going to take a wild guess that your visit has something to do with Kelsey Madison.”

“Yes, ma’am…Jo. Ms. Madison and Douglas Gregory, the family’s longtime employee, told me you were interested in purchasing her property.”

“I was but I’ve changed my mind.”

“You changed your mind after striking Ms. Madison with your vehicle.”

“She came out of nowhere and ran in front of my SUV. She even admitted it to the officer who showed up to respond to my 911 call.”

Franklin looked uncomfortable as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a notepad. “You happened to also be on scene after Ms. Madison’s car hit a tree the other day.”

“I was with Sherry. We were taking her new car for a spin and came up on it right after it happened.”

“You were nowhere in the vicinity prior to her accident?”

“No. Raylene Baxter, Sherry and I spent some time at the car dealership.
